Only 0,5-1 % of the world’s population has vitiligo which makes this skin condition very rare. Vitiligo is a medical condition of skin when it loses pigmentation and patchy patterns appear on the body.
As much as albino people, those with vitiligo have that unique and exquisite beauty in them but unfortunately very few embrace these rare patterns on their skin. Elisabeth Van Aalderen is one of these few people but embracing her body hasn’t come easy for her too. At the age of 25, Elisabeth noticed white spits on her hand which eventually ended up covering most of her body. After trying different treatments Elisabeth finally realized that the only useful treatment will be to give up the idea of getting rid of the pigments and embracing herself the way she is.
This is when she decided to turn her passion for photography into the empowerment of women that are self-conscious about their body just because they have vitiligo. In fact, we think that vitiligo is nothing to be self-conscious about but something to rather be proud of, after all, it makes these people stand out and be one of their kind. What can be more beautiful than uniqueness?
In her Shades of Pale series, Elisabeth captured women with the same skin condition to celebrate the vitiligo body and its infinite splendor. Check out the exquisite photos and tell us what are your standards and perceptions of beauty?
